Fernando, producer of the Brazilian base of this blend from Sitio Bela Vista in Mogiana, is a member of the APROD cooperative, based around the city of Divinolândia. APROD works to combine agricultural and forestry technologies to create a more productive and sustainable land-use system.
The middle component comes from ASCAFÉ, an organisation in Cauca, Colombia. This coffee, named “Spirit of Peace”, connects deeply with our own mission of rehabilitation and creating opportunities: Cauca has long been a conflict zone, but as part of recent peace agreements ASCAFÉ have facilitated a comprehensive programme of “rehabilitation through productivity” for ex-combatants, teaching them agricultural skills like environmental sustainability and crop diversity, whilst encouraging interest in coffee farming in younger generations, giving them a new lease on life.
The blend is topped off with a lot from a washing station in Kayanza, Burundi called “Izuba”, meaning “sun” in Kirundi. Izuba aims to provide premiums where possible to both farmers and station staff. The producers are paid in three installments – one at the start of the harvest, one at the end of the harvest, and then a premium based on quality and sales price of the coffee.
